#NYFW 2016 Plus Size Couture Recap

Those who don’t fit into the norm continued to be given the fashion spotlight even on New York Fashion Week’s #NYFW #NYFW2016 ultra glam catwalks. From plus-sized models to Australia’s Down Syndrome poster Queen Madeline Stuart, NYFW continued the trend to glorify their billions of customers who don’t fit into the “normal” category.

Versatile designer and fashion journalist Malan Breton shows off his edgy plus-size fashion for F/W 2016.

Plus-size fashions took center stage this fall for spring lines, so this February’s #NYFW2016 strayed far from this emerging market.

Still, one reason why plus-sized lines and models continue to walk down catwalks is the French finally outlawed too-thin models (for body and mental health reasons). Just passed in December, France’s new no-more-skin-and-bones model law reverberated to New York’s show with yet another influx of designs for lusciously thick and gorgeous models size 12+.

Taiwan-born-and-American-based couture designer Malan Breton showed some of the show’s best plus-size fashions for fall 2016. Titled “Gotham Disco Dollies,” Breton’s show rocked #NYFW2016 with its jewel-colored Asian brocades, fancy embroidery and velveteen pants. The Malan Breton show was brilliantly curated by celebrity stylist Montomery Frazier with jewelry by Maria Pujana and shoes by Michela Rigucci.

Latin designers heated up #NYFW with The Art Hearts Fashion Latin showcase. The show opened with designer Gregorio Sanchez who showed classic crisp tailoring alongside lace detailing, bold patterns and cinched waists. Other Latin designers who strutted down this catwalk included handbag designer Kristina George, womens and mens wear designer Pineda Covalin who wowed the crowd with wraps, vests and geometric print dresses. The evening ended with the sparkling gold, silver and white gown collection of Willfredo Gerardo.

Hopefully, the plus-sized market will just become a normal part of every designer’s show just as thick-friendly designer Malan Breton so bravely and beautifully captured at #NYFW 2016.
