Road Tested: 2019 Ford Edge ST SUV

US automaker Ford knows its stuff. From cars to trucks and beyond, Ford has some real heat in its 2019 lineup — including the 2019 Escape ST. This SUV features power and performance to spare, all while being fun to drive.

All-Wheel Drive Disconnect: Not Your Daddy’s AWD

When it comes to incorporating all-wheel drive in SUVs, auto manufacturers often take two steps forward and one step back. Plenty of systems will transfer torque between all four wheels, but the Ford Edge ST takes this one step further. In fact, Ford’s approach to variable AWD features the unique ability to disconnect the rear driveline, allowing the Edge’s front wheels to propel it completely. It’s a first for Ford, and it’s used to great effect.

Not only does this reduce energy demand on the vehicle’s drivetrain — but it also reduces overall drag. The best part? You don’t even have to flick a switch, as the Edge’s onboard computer decides, based on road conditions, when you need the extra oomph and when you don’t. Taken together, the AWD Disconnect system provides better economy and lets you keep the performance of an all-wheel drive.

Power and Performance

AWD Disconnect is an innovative feature to be sure, but the 2019 Edge ST has a few more tricks up its sleeve. The 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine on this action-packed SUV throws out 335 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque, giving you the ability to power up those mountain roads while hauling cargo of up to 3,500 lbs. That’s some serious muscle. Yet all that power doesn’t mean sacrificing at the pump, with the 2019 Edge still offers fuel economy of 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. That’s more than respectable for a sports utility vehicle of its size and class.

On the performance side, the Edge ST doesn’t disappoint either. An 8-speed automatic transmission comes standard with that 2.7-liter V6, and thanks to the Edge’s paddle shifters you’ll feel in complete control at all times. The SUV’s digital instrument cluster will even change dynamically to display a tachometer as well, providing for a fine-tuned driving experience you’d be hard-pressed to find with any other vehicle.

Cabin Comfort and Class

The 2019 Edge ST’s interior is designed around comfort and accessibility. Standard features include dual-zone auto electronic temperature control with a particulate filter, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an array of 12-volt and USB charging ports, the SYNC 3 center console display, and SiriusXM satellite radio powered by a Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Meanwhile, Edge ST’s driver-assist technologies provide even more comfort and class while also making driving safer than ever. Standard features like a rear-view camera, auto high-beam headlamps, and the Ford CoPilot360 system with its cross-traffic alerting Blind Spot Information System and Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking will ensure you get to wherever you’re going without a scratch.

An SUV for All Seasons

No matter where you’re going or what you’re doing, the 2019 Ford Edge ST has the chops to get the job done. From hauling heavy loads to worksites or simply getting that precious cargo from school to soccer practice, this SUV will get you there safely and in style.
