We at AGL are firm believers in being your best self! For that reason, it’s no surprise that NBC’s new show Strong is shaping up to be one of our new favorites! Strong, which is executive produced by Sylvester Stallone, premiered earlier this month on NBC. Stallone teamed up with executive producer David Broome of The Biggest Loser for the world’s newest approach to tackling obesity and other health risks that continually plague our communities.
The show takes 10 normal women who identify as out of shape and pairs them each with a highly sought-after male trainer. Together, the pair compete on “a transformative journey to better themselves physically and mentally … in this reality competition involving challenges that will test the ladies’ strength, endurance and intellectual stamina.” says TVGuide.com. The female contestants, who include young professionals, mothers, photographers, teachers, and writers must work with their personal trainer to avoid being eliminated each week. The women compete not only to rid themselves of their bad health habits, but also for a whopping $1 million dollars to be split with their trainer.
We personally love how different Strong is from your average weight loss challenge. In talking about the show, Stallone remarked that “Skinny is no longer the goal,” and said the contestants are encouraged to focus on “being fit, and getting healthy and strong.” You heard correctly—according to Strong’s executive producer, getting in shape goes much deeper than shedding unwanted pounds. While many of us are so focused on reaching a goal weight, we forget that being fit is more of a lifestyle than a numbers game.
American professional volleyball player, sports announcer, fashion model and actress, Gabrielle Reece, hosts the competition—and for very good reason! Reece, a mother of three, knows firsthand just how hard it can be to stay physically fit while juggling a busy schedule. She, like Stallone, told our correspondents that the show is actually about being the best you that you can be.
Although the show’s first ratings were considered less than satisfactory (with 3.4 million viewers the Wednesday night it debuted), we have high hopes that audiences around the world will take notice of this unique approach to fitness and reality television! Strong airs on Thursdays at 8pm Eastern/7pm Central.
