If you’re the type of movie-goer who would rather watch an action-packed sci-fi flick instead of a syrupy romantic comedy, you’re in luck. Allegiant, the third installment of the four-part Divergent series comes out Friday. Tris, your favorite female protagonist, her instructor Four, and most of the cast from the first film are back with a few new faces, including Jeff Daniels and Bill Skarsgard.
This time around, Tris and crew go beyond the wall, leaving everything they know and venturing into the world outside the post-apocalyptic city of Chicago. Now, instead of warring with factions within the city, they’re out to save all of humanity. There have been casualties and losses up until now, so needless to say, this won’t be a walk in the park.

Theo James (Four)
On his character’s growth: In the first movie he’s kind of an outsider and we’re just getting to know him. In the second movie he’s trying to protect [Shailene Woodley’s] character; that’s his modus operandi. In the third movie, he’s a bit more relaxed. They’ve overcome some pretty rough stuff and he’s more open to discovery and seeing what is beyond the wall.
On what kind of roles he looks for: It depends on what you’ve filmed already and what you’re doing at the time. Like with any job, you have to make choices based on where you are and how you feel at that moment. And it changes with age and sense of self, and feeling of achievement.
Mekhi Phifer (Max)
On his recurring role as Max: I had a great time filming [the third movie]; it was great to work with everyone again. The cast has become like family and there are always good vibes on the set. And I love playing Max. Max is someone who stands up for what he believes in. I would say I have that in common with him.
Zoe Kravitz (Christina)
On the evolution of her character: Christina is a lot tougher. She’s lost a little bit of her angst. I think she used to be kind of angst-y and try to figure it all out, and a loudmouth. In this film she’s allowing herself to really sit back. She’s a lot more military. She’s gone through a lot at this point. And I think she’s less concerned about being seen and heard and genuinely trying to survive.
On the film’s special effects:There was a lot more green screen, a lot more special effects, so you have to have so much more faith [in the process.] You have to trust that whatever you’re doing, which can feel silly in the moment, is going to work later once they work the magic.
The Divergent Series movies are based on the Divergent book trilogy authored by Veronica Roth. Robert Schwentke has directed the last two Divergent Series films and all three, so far, have been produced by Lucy Fisher, Pouya Shabazian and Douglas Wick, and distributed by Lionsgate.
