Less than a month from now, many New Yorkers will have the opportunity to get out of town for a long weekend. Not everyone wants to get on a plane and deal with the madness found in airports on holiday weekends. In turn, the idea of getting in a car (or train) for a few hours and winding up in a new city and state for Memorial Day Weekend is appealing to many New Yorkers.
Below are three trip suggestions for readers of A Global Lifestyle:
“With 1.25 miles of shoreline, Asbury Park not only offers a scenic escape but is also a cultural hub for music lovers with venues like Asbury Lanes, the iconic 1960s bowling alley-turned music venue we are reopening to the public this Memorial Day weekend, The Stone Pony and Wonder Bar,” began Brian Cheripka, Senior Vice President of iStar and the Master Developer for the Asbury Park waterfront. “A walkable city by the sea, Asbury Park is a one-of-a-kind destination less than 90 minutes outside New York City.”
Cheripka continued: “The Asbury is an award-winning boutique hotel that opened in 2016. It is the first major project in iStar’s multi-billion dollar redevelopment plan for the waterfront. The Asbury provides a place for visitors to not just play, but to stay and experience what makes Asbury Park such an incredible destination.”
“Only a quick train ride from New York, Rhode Island is the perfect weekend getaway for those itching to trade in the city for 100 pristine beaches, a host of outdoor adventure activities and an unmatched culinary scene with the Ocean State’s freshest catch,” Lara Salamano, the Chief Marketing Officer at the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation, told me. “With hundreds of cultural events from the annual Newport Jazz Festival to the oldest continuous 4th of July parade in American history in Bristol, there is something for every traveler this summer and Rhode Island’s fun-size makes it easy to catch every event with ease.”
The Tilted Barn Brewery is another favorite spot in the area. A trip to Tilted will include a firsthand look at all of the ingredients that go into making handcrafted beer, such as the farms own maple sugar-blush trees.
“What was once a refuge for D.C.’s political and sports figures is now a hub for New Yorkers looking for a Hamptons alternative,” pointed out John Flannigan, Founder & CEO of Wylder Hotels. “Wylder Tilghman Island has its own seaside cottage vibe, fresh seafood and modern feel, without the crowds or expensive accommodations in other East Coast beach towns. Its unique charm is one of the primary reasons we chose Tilghman Island to plant the first Wylder Hotel location.”
The completely-renovated Wylder Hotel Tilghman Island features 54 newly-designed guest rooms that channel a relaxed seaside cottage vibe infused with modern comforts. Also on deck is a new saltwater swimming pool and two restaurants, Bar Mumbo and Tickler’s Crab Shack. Said established were envisioned by Chef Sean Wheaton, a seven-year alum of José Andrés’ Think Food Group.
