Terra Glamping is a Brooklyn-based company known to have pioneered the high-end form of outdoor recreation known as “glamping” on the East Coast. Recently Terra Glamping announced that it will launch an expansive site overlooking Gardiners Bay in East Hampton’s Cedar Point County Park. The company had been selected by the Suffolk County Parks Department, who publicly issued a request for proposals with the goal of introducing new ventures that would attract more campers to Cedar Point. Reservations can now be made online for Terra Glamping: East Hampton, which will host guests beginning Friday May 24th through the last weekend of October.
I had the pleasure of doing Q&A with Terra Glamping co-founder Rebecca Martin about the past, present and future of her company and also what to expect when glamping for the first time. More on Terra Glamping can be found online via the company’s official website at www.terraglamping.com.
When did you first become aware of the glamping concept?
Rebecca Martin: I’ve been involved in glamping and outdoor experiences since co-founding TerraVelo Tours in 2014, which was a week-long bike and adventure tour featuring private chefs, activities such as hiking, rafting and horseback riding, and the pampering of a masseuse and sunrise yoga. We hosted these tours in some of the United States’ most beautiful locations, including Southern Utah’s 5 national parks, Yellowstone National Park, Napa California and Woodstock, New York.
Two years later, to focus even more on the hospitality experience, Terra Glamping launched. Its first location was a glamping hotel in Northern California. We followed that with sites and pop-ups across the country, as well as an event production business, Terra Glamping Events.
What do you wish more people knew about glamping?
Rebecca Martin: That you can still escape the confines of the city life and experience nature, but be as comfortable as you would be in a beautiful, fully-furnished hotel. We also want to emphasize that at Terra Glamping, we offer plenty of programming and activities for guests, including complimentary paddleboards and kayaks to take out on the Bay; sunrise yoga; movie nights; live music; nightly campfires and more.
How would you describe the new East Hampton site of Terra Glamping to someone not yet familiar?
Rebecca Martin:A luxury camping resort right on the water in the gorgeous Cedar Point County Park. It’s a terrific vacation and getaway for families, groups of friends, couples and even corporate retreats. We’ll have 30 fully furnished sleeping tents with queen-sized memory foam beds; there will be both one and two-bedroom tents. Each tent has views of the Bay and is outfitted with a six-foot deck with seating.
In addition to our beautifully-furnished sleeping tents, we have two lounge tents with couches, books and board games; a dining tent; bathroom and shower facilities; a fully-stocked grilling area; a fire pit; and hammocks. Each morning will begin with a continental breakfast featuring local pastries. By night, we’ll host campfires with a s’mores bar, all complimentary for guests.
Is the East Hampton site close to a lot of landmarks and things to do off-site?
Rebecca Martin: Yes! So, within Cedar Point County Park there are terrific hiking and walking trails and of course Gardiners Bay. We are also just a 10-minute drive from the bustling town center of East Hampton, home to great restaurants, shopping, art galleries and more.
What else is coming up for Terra Glamping?
Rebecca Martin: An activation in D.C. at the Watergate Hotel, continuing to host private events and for East Hampton, announcing our full schedule of summer programming. And we are also excited to operate the East Hampton glamping hotel for many summer seasons to come!
Finally, Rebecca, any last words for the kids?
Rebecca Martin: In addition to family-friendly summer getaways, Terra Glamping: East Hampton is available to book for all sort of private events, including corporate retreats, weddings, photoshoots, product launches and more.
