Road Tested: The 2020 Camaro

Chevy’s 2020 model year lineup is here, and the newest iteration of the venerable Camaro is ready and waiting for your attention. This year, the iconic American muscle car brings some new things to the table to keep the brand fresh and enticing for a whole new generation of car lovers — including some much-needed affordability!

More Trim Levels Than You Can Shake a Stick At

The 2020 Camaro comes with options upon options, and that starts with the ridiculous number of trim levels you’ve got to choose from. The entry-level LS might just come with a 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, but it’s still the most modestly-priced Camaro at just a bit over $25,000.

The Camaro LT, the next level up, comes in not one but three flavors: the 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT. These offer much more power and amenities for those looking to pay a bit more for some real fun, including an optional 3.6-liter V6 engine. Chevy has also extended its 10-speed automatic transmission, complete with paddle shifters and usually reserved for its V8 Camaros, to the LT line as well.

Next up is the truly powerful LT1. Don’t get this confused with the 1LT, though; this behemoth comes with a gruesomely gorgeous 6.2-liter V8, available in the aforementioned 10-speed automatic as well as the standard transmission. The 1LT shares its big block engine with the SS line, with both the 1SS and the 2SS giving you the power to dominate while also calling back to the classic Super Sport Camaros of the 1970s.

Finally, we’ve got the cream of the crop when it comes to trim: the ZL1. This beast has a supercharged 6.2-liter that spits out a truly outrageous 650 horsepower with 650 lb-ft of torque, available in either standard or automatic. It’s also got the highest price tag at around $64,0000. That’s a fine chunk of change but still comparable to other top-of-the-line American muscle cars.

Performance, Comfort, and Styling

Chevy struck a nerve with the 2010 debut of its 5th generation Camaro. The newest permutation of that fantastic design that began rolling off the production floor in 2016 has further refined it, with the result being a 2020 Camaro that has eye-dropping style, in-cabin comfort, and the kind of responsive performance you’d expect from such a muscle car legacy.

There’s plenty of flavor inside and out with options like orange brake calipers, dark-tinted taillights, and rear spoilers available in a much wider range of trim options than before. Meanwhile, in-cabin options like RECARO seats with red belts join the list of available amenities like built-in WiFi, Bluetooth and aux audio jack satellite radio, and a center-console infotainment system with connected navigation and support for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

These perks are great, but the real meat is in the performance. The 2020 Camaro features available custom Launch Control for speed off the starting line, Performance Traction Management to provide grip and control at high speed, and a Driver Mode selector to key in road conditions for even more fine-tuned performance. There’s even a Performance Data Recorder to check out your latest track run.

The Last Word

Altogether, the 2020 Camaro features some of the best price-versus-performance results out there today. Combine that with its jaw-dropping aesthetics inside and out and we’ve got a definite winner in the American muscle car department!
