Beyoncé, Beyoncé, Beyoncé. What can we can say? She did it again! She came, she empowered, she conquered–and, of course, she SLAYED! To date, this is the most vulnerable, authentic, and raw we’ve seen Beyoncé.
For days, we were all wondering what the World Premiere Event Lemonade was. For those who guessed an album release, you were correct! In the hour-long HBO special, through acting, song and narrative, Beyoncé walked us through many situations women are faced with. The special was broken down into 10 different sections: Intuition, Denial, Anger, Apathy, Emptiness, Accountability, Reformation, Forgiveness, Hope, and Redemption.
Queen Bey’s lyrics excavated pain from relationships. The word “cheating” was used several times–she even mentioned watching her parents’ struggling marriage.
While listening to some of the lyrics, it almost made you wonder if her marriage was struggling and if this was a dramatic way of dropping divorce papers to Jay.
As the story continued, we discovered that wasn’t the case! She showed visuals of her mom and new husband, Richard Lawson, and exclusive home footage of her and Jay displaying love and forgiveness. Lesley McSpadden, the mother of the late Mike Brown, and Sybrina Fulton, Trayvon Martin’s mom, also appeared signifying “Hope.”
In actuality, Beyoncé was just shining light on situations we all deal with. From love to hope, we learned that status doesn’t stop the lemons from being thrown at you.
Let’s not forget to mention all the Black Girl Magic she had in the HBO special! Beyoncé was definitely making a statement featuring favorites such as, Serena Williams, Winnie Harlow, and Quvenzhané Wallis.
Lemonade was not only entertaining but empowering! Once again, Beyoncé proved why she is the Queen and, unapologetically, a black woman.
Moral of Lemonade: Love, Live, Have Hope and Forgive. When life throws you lemons, make lemonade!
Mid-way through the premiere of Lemonade, Beyonce’s new album Lemonade was released on Tidal! The 12-track album features full versions of all the songs heard in the HBO Special.
