Over the years, the Met Gala has become a veritable who’s who in the world of celebrity entertainers. While the annual event is, in fact, a black-tie fundraiser for the fashion department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, it is has also become one great big red carpet.
This year’s theme was Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology, which looks at how fashion has morphed since the invention of the sewing machine and beyond. But many of the celebrities in attendance put their own spin on the theme and represented what the combination of fashion-plus-technology meant to them.
Beyonce didn’t disappoint in a long-sleeved, blush-colored latex gown–that’s right, latex. The fitted, bejeweled, floor-length number looked as smooth as “butta” and did justice to Queen Bey’s flawless figure. Or was it the other way around?
Taylor Swift looked all grown up with a tousled, chin-length do and a dark berry lip color. Her sleeveless, silver dress featured side cut-outs and stopped well above the knee. She showed of her long gams in strappy heels that wrapped all the way up to the knee.
Kendall Jenner’s colorful, figure-flattering dress looked as if it might have been digitally designed by computer.
Sister Kim Kardashian went full-on femme-bot in head-to-toe silver in a long-sleeved, gown with a thigh-high split.
Lupita Nyong’o channeled her inner android princess in a sea foam green gown that shimmered with silver and had a plunging neckline and deep cut sides. Talk of the night was Nyong’o’s futuristic up-do, piled sky-high atop her lovely head.
Zendaya was radiant in a shimmering, one-shoulder, antique-gold gown that draped behind her, and an old-school 70’s-style mushroom ‘do.
Ageless supermodel Cindy Crawford stunned in a shimmery, platinum, long-sleeved gown that bared her shoulders and offered subtle peeks of skin.
Lady Gaga was true to form in a metallic bolero jacket replete with a motherboard circuit design, a cut-out bodysuit with metallic stripes, and blue metallic super-platform boots.
British fashion model Jourdan Dunn gave much computer love in two dresses that night. Her long-sleeved, high-necked dresses–one long and silver with black mesh insets, the other short and black with silver details–not to mention her ombre-metallic “lob” (long bob) hairstyle–demonstrated how fashion-forward tech-inspired looks can be.
