An upscale alternative to the chemical-laden salts often found at supermarkets, the Hamptons Salt Company creates 100%-natural salts that also keep taste in mind. Interesting flavors infused with the specially sourced salts of the company include Black Truffle, Garlic, Ghost Pepper, Smoked Hickory, Rosemary, Garlic, Smoked Mesquite and Espresso. Peter Pierce of the Hamptons Salt Company spoke to A Global Lifestyle about his company’s past, present and future.
What came first, the Hamptons influence on your salts or knowing that your company was going to be named after the Hamptons?
The Hamptons influence definitely came first. I started coming to the Hamptons 25 years ago and fell in love with the natural beauty of the East End and beach lifestyle. When I decided to start the salt company, there was never a question about calling it Hamptons Salt. We offer only the finest of sea salts from all over the world, and that is a perfect fit with the esthetic of the Hamptons.
Do you have a favorite of the Hamptons Salt Company offerings?
It is really hard to choose a favorite, but I think our Finishing Salt is as good as any salt on the planet. I created the salt to balance the perfect taste, look and coverage with just a sprinkle on any finished dish. I use it almost daily on my avocado toast.
What’s coming up for the brand?
We are excited to be launching two new flavored salts this year. Stay tuned for Hamptons Matcha Salt and Hamptons Sriracha Salt this spring!
Is there a brand accomplishment you are most proud of?
I think having our Finishing Salt featured in Food & Wine Magazine. It was great to see so many people from across the country get exposed to our little salt company!
How much of the year do you usually spend in the Hamptons?
Not enough! I hope with each passing year that I get to spend more time in the Hamptons. In the future, I would love to see the brand grow enough to support a Hamptons Salt Shop and be able to become a year-round resident. Once you move from a renter to a Hamptons homeowner, you really understand the beauty of the Hamptons year-round! My favorite month is actually September, when the sun is still high and the pace has slowed dramatically from the peak of the season.
Where are some of your favorite spots to dine in the Hamptons?
There are so many great spots. My go-to’s are Estia’s for breakfast, Pierre’s in Bridgehampton, Baron’s Cove in Sag Harbor, and Sant Ambroeus in Southampton.
Finally, Peter, any last words for the kids?
Read your food labels. There is no reason for salt to say anything except salt. Most salt consumed in the U.S. is refined — stripped of natural minerals — with added iodine and anti-caking agents. Our salts are 100% all natural!
