The North American International Auto Show — also known as the Detroit Auto Show — commenced this year on January 14 at the iconic Cobo Center. A two-week experience, the Detroit Auto Show has a history of unveiling the latest debuts by the world’s leading automotive brands. In other words, attendees get up close and personal looks at the latest and greatest from the auto industry.
The Ford Motor Company was particularly active at this year’s event. Here are some of the highlights. (All images and video courtesy of Ford Motor Co.)
- Mustang Bullitt – For fans of Old Hollywood, the Auto Show saw the unearthing of the original 1968 Ford Mustang as driven by Steve McQueen in the movie Bullitt. Said McKeel Hagerty, CEO of the world’s largest classic car insurer, “Steve McQueen is such an icon in the car world that we expect a lot of interest in owning [the 1968 Ford], which will increase its price if, in fact, the owner sells it. We saw the same thing happen with other iconic TV and movie cars like the original Batmobile, which sold for $4.6M in 2013, and the James Bond Aston Martin DB5, which sold for $4.1M in 2010. It would not be surprising if the Bullitt, were it to come to auction, sold in a similar range.”The limited-edition Mustang Bullitt featuring a re-tuned 5.0-liter V8 engine that packs at least 475 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque, topping out at 163 mph. The new version of the 1968 movie car also includes a 12-inch, all-digital LCD instrument cluster and can be customized to incorporate RECARO black leather-trimmed seats with unique green accent stitching. Carl Widmann, Mustang Chief Engineer, said, “When making a Bullitt, there are certain things it absolutely must have. It has to have the right attitude, it has to be unique in some way from a Mustang GT and, more than anything, it has to be bad ass!”
- 2019 Ford Ranger – Ford unveiled the 2019 Ford Ranger for North America as produced at the company’s Michigan plant. Hau Thai-Tang, Ford Executive Vice President of Product Development and Purchasing, explained, “Ranger has always held a special place in the hearts of truck fans. The all-new Ranger is designed for today’s mid-size truck buyer, delivering even more utility, capability and technology for those who blend city living with more off-the-grid adventures on weekends.” The Ranger comes in entry-level XL, mid-level XLT and high-level Lariat trim series with available Chrome and Sport appearance and FX Off-Road packages, and in SuperCab or SuperCrew cab configurations.
- Mustang Shelby GT500 – The all-new Mustang Shelby GT500, as arriving in 2019, will be the most powerful street-legal production Ford Ever. With more than 700 horsepower projected, the fast-back coupe will be twice as powerful as the original 1967 Mustang performance model. The automobile will include new innovative track technologies, performance hardware, plus aggressive and functional track-tuned styling.
- Ford Edge ST – Following Ford’s best-ever U.S. SUV sales in 2017, Ford further steps up the game by introducing the first performance-enhanced ST to its SUV lineup: the all-new Edge ST. The ST features superior handling and braking; ST-tuned sport suspension; Sport Mode; new, quick-shifting, 8-speed transmission; standard all-wheel-drive; and the most powerful V6 engine in its class.
