Taylor-Miller answered some questions for A Global Lifestyle about her wonderful brand, which can be visited online at www.fattycakesny.com.
A Global Lifestyle: Where did the “Fattycakes” name come from?
Jennifer Taylor-Miller: A friend came up with the name at work one day. It made us laugh so we went with it.
What was your history as a baker before starting FattyCakesNY? Do you come from the restaurant world?
I worked in restaurants starting at 15 years old, slinging blizzards at Dairy Queen, which is an inspiration for FattyCakesNY. I’ve baked for as long as I can remember, I just finally honed the cookies in my 20s and stuck to those.
Your company is originally from New York but moved to Florida. What inspired that?
I’m originally from Alabama. I moved to Florida in middle school, then to New York in 2004. I moved to South Florida in 2014 with my husband’s job — Trader Joe’s — and had a second child.
What is your favorite of the FattyCakesNY offerings?
Definitey the Pick Five Snack Cake. It’s totally customizable and I created those because I really, really love sandwich cookies.
Do you ship your products everywhere? How do they stay fresh and intact while shipping?
Yes — in the U.S., I do. They stay fresh with careful wrapping and shipping in custom insulated cake shippers.
What is coming up for the brand in the coming months?
Just getting as many cookie cakes out as possible! I love baking and hearing that clients are totally enjoying their FattyCakesNY experience!
When not busy with FattyCakesNY, how do you like to spend your free time?
I have two boys–five and two-and-a-half years old–so I like to hang out with them and read books when I can.
Do you have a favorite restaurant in New York?
The staples from the old neighborhood, South Williamsburg: Taco Chulo and Cheers Thai. In Manhattan, Il Buco or Da Silvano.
Finally, Jennifer, any last words for the kids?
Stay sweet, my friends. And eat all the FattyCakes you can!
