There is hope. Dope. This movie gives you a throwback feeling of “Boyz in The Hood” meets House Party where the main character actually makes it. High-school senior Malcolm (Shameik Moore) and his friends Jib (Tony Revolori) and Diggy (Kiersey Clemons) bond over ’90s hip-hop culture, navigating high school and playing music in their own punk band. A crazy encounter with a drug dealer named Dom (A$AP Rocky) lands Malcolm and friends at the dealer’s nightclub birthday party which turns their senior year into one they will never forget. The movie Dope isn’t just a movie filled with your typically stereotypes about a young black man raised by a single parent trying to make it out the hood to college. It makes you think about the Treyvon Martin’s in the world, our community and for us to think beyond cause-and-effect, race and expectations. When it doesn’t happen, Pharell brings you back with dope music to vibe to. Check one of my favorite songs, Can’t Bring Me Down, by Awreeoh.
The movie is in theaters worldwide now.
