Located in the heart of the Mexican Riviera, Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen is a popular oceanfront resort in Mexico. For the first time in the resort’s 3-year history, music has become a focus for the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen as the Playa Sunset Sessions marks the resort’s first parlay into cultural programming.
Mexican and Israeli international DJ duo Niros & Holt kicked things off for the Playa Sunset Sessions series by playing a curated DJ set that encompasses their heritage remixed with latin influences. Throughout the next year, music curators and other icons will be chosen to provide the soundtrack for the hotel through digital playlists, content and events.
I had the pleasure of doing Q&A with one-half of Niros & Holt, Niros, about working with the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen and more on behalf of A Global Lifestyle. More on the resort can be found online at http://playadelcarmen.grand.hyatt.com, while Niros can be followed on Instagram via @NirosBarnea.
How did you wind up working with Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen?
It was all from a friend’s recommendation and the Hotel/Issa reached out They wanted to bring a piece of New York music and nightlife to Playa del Carmen.
Is this the first time you have collaborated with a hotel before?
Yes, it is. We are making our debut with The Grand Hyatt.
Why do you think music is such an important part of travel/resort programming?
Music creates an ambience for people, it puts a sound to an image.
What are you most excited about for your visit to the resort, and Playa del Carmen?
I am excited to relax at the Cenote Spa. I am looking forward to getting a massage. Also, can’t wait to have a Mexican breakfast from La Cocina.
What should be expected from one of your Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen performances?
Summer, sunset and good vibes — any listener will be transported to Playa del Carmen.
How has your DJ’ing style changed over the years?
My style is still evolving to this day. I like the challenge of playing different genres because I learn to appreciate them more.
Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen work aside, what is coming up for you?
I am still doing a few rooftop parties here in Brooklyn and continuing my Post Season Franchise Records residency at Jupiter Disco. I am starting a new party at Kinfolk called Secret Potion with some DJ friends this August, so that should be fun.
What was the last concert you attended for fun?
Last fun concert I attended was Kedr Lavinsky this past weekend. I love her ambient Russian wave music.
Are there any Mexican or Mexican-American artists or DJs we should be looking out for?
I am always looking out for music produced by Latin and Mexican artists. I love Rebolledos’ sound, he is probably my favorite Mexican DJ/ Producer. Latin American artists I like include Matias Aguayo and all the artist that release under his label Comeme, like the DJs Pareja, Aye Aye, Rionegro, and Vaskular.
Finally, Niros, any last words for the kids?
Don’t give up.
